I’m 37 and about to quit my ‘good job’ to take a sailboat indefinitely around the world with my husband. I’m so happy I found this newsletter!
As you mentioned, the craziest part for us is the opportunity costs. But we’ve downsized so much that our operating costs are only about a quarter of what they were in our ‘old life.’ This has allowed my husband to focus full-time in the boatyard so we can save more money on boat upgrades/maintenance.
I’m echoing your point: you don’t need to be rich to take a radical path in life. You just gotta plan a bit, you need to be patient, and if you’re in the 99%, you’ll need to be extremely frugal.
Thanks Cory, and congrats on taking the leap. Hopefully trailblazers like you will help others understand that “radical” is a subjective judgement that holds us back from pursuing the healthiest, most interesting paths that serve our lives best long term. The open sea seems freaky to me so actually what you’re doing does strike me as radical! But some of the crazy risks I took during my time off would probably seem that way to others.
I was talking with someone about this today. For some reason many people, myself included, assume we couldn't possibly quit our job to travel, even if it's our biggest dream. Sometimes we need a big wake up call to realise it's totally possible, if we do a bit of financial planning etc. I ended up spending a year backpacking solo around the world and it's the best thing I ever did!
Love it! I think the reason is that we’ve been taught that working our entire lives is the only way to not only remain financially secure, but secure validation and approval. Yet the fact is, no one is spending much time thinking about you, they’re focused on their own stuff, so all that approval isn’t with much. For me, the wake up call was coral reef health declines—I felt it was now or never to see healthy reefs. And gosh I’m glad I did.
Love this! It’s important for people to realize they can achieve their wild dream with some planning and prioritization shifts that make it not so wild
So good Nicky. -You can change your life, by choice, completely, any time. No one else gets to decide your path.-
I always tell my kids, you're the boss of you! 10 years ago I did a 365 day sabbatical and it changed my life. Now, I'm doing it again, traveling the world but this time working remotely. I know firsthand that if I could do it, anyone can.

You're so right, work can become too much of our identity. I was delighted to dive the Great Barrier Reef 12 years ago - it was spectacular!

I appreciate your perspectives and guidance on how to find what matters and budgeting.
I recently took the plunge and am planning to write about it next week!
Amazing news, I’ll be following your journey
Thank you, Nicky! I actually run two substacks - I'll be writing about sabbaticals in the travel and language one (polyglotclaudia.substack.com) 😊

You’re an inspiration to those of us who want to do it again someday! I’ll be telling my (future) kids the same thing
